The first local round for nordBEC 2011 took place in Copenhagen on 8-9th November 2010 and it was a big success! The students from Technical University of Denmark (DTU) competed in two categories: Team Design and Case Study, for a chance to go to Trondheim for nordBEC, as well as for other great prizes offered by sponsors: Maersk, Microsoft and Studenterhuset Copenhagen.
After a 2 week period of promotion on DTU campus, BEST Copenhagen received no less than 49 applications, out of which 35 were teams of students eager to compete in Case Study and the other 14 were teams willing to take the challenge in Team Design. The process of selection was long, as it was so hard task to choose the 16 lucky teams to compete – 8 for each category.
On the 8th November, after welcome speeches from Martin Vigild, the dean of DTU and Marie Rasmussen, main-organizer of BEC Copenhagen, the 8 teams competing on Team Design started working on the task provided by Microsoft. The students had to use the game design program KoDu to build a game that would illustrate one of the laws of physics. After almost 4 hours of hard work, a lot of fun and great ideas, all the teams presented their games.

The winners – 4 international master students – came up with a very addictive multiplayer game where the players had to compete on collecting apples in a world where some random roaming robots where going for them as well. For this, they won an Xbox, a voucher for the Kinect Xbox controller and VIP passes for all events happening during spring semester at Studenterhuset in downtown Copenhagen.

On the 9th November it was time for Case Study, in which 8 teams of students tried to solve a real world (confidential) problem provided by Maersk. After no less than 3 hours of brainstorming, discussing different possible solutions and trying to figure out the best one, the teams presented their ideas to the jury and answered all their questions. The company representatives considered that all 8 solutions provided by the students were very good and innovative, so they had a hard time choosing the winners.

The winning team – 4 Danish students, in their bachelor studies – left home with a 4 iPads, VIP passes for Studenterhuset Copenhagen and plane tickets for nordBEC in Trondheim.
At the end of each day of the competition, after the winners were announced, all participants, organizers and sponsors relaxed over a great dinner and a glass of champagne.
We wish good luck to the organizers of all local BEST engineering competitions in Nordic region.
See you in nordBEC,
Royal BEST Group Copenhagen
