uBEC 2011

On the 28th oh March, uBEC 2011 finally took place at Uppsala University, completing the local Nordic rounds!

10 teams of 3-4 people participated in the Case Study competition, excited to use the creative part of their minds to solve a case presented by Semcon MLS, the Uppsala branch of Semcon.

The case itself focused on creativity and a problem that Semcon themselves are working with. What they wanted from the students was a plan and ideas on how to expand their local branch, from today’s 15 to 50 employees in 2014 and be the top-of-mind business partner in the region. The case basically consisted of three parts:

1.      Targeting

2.      Marketing

3.      Conquering

Being an engineer is not only about solving technical problems, and the uBEC participants proved that it is not only what they can do either. After the three hour long Case Study, every team presented their own solution as well as a strategic plan for the expansion of Semcon MLS. Many of the teams focused on the student relations to promote Semcon MLS and also expand – as Semcon noticed themselves, the University is a great place to find new ideas and creative, committed people!

After the five minute presentations and a review of the strategic plans, it was time to announce the winners. Semcon themselves were surprised by how creative the students were and said that ”some of these things are like ’wow, we have to try this out as soon as we can’”.

However, even though we were all very impressed with what the participants had come up with, there has to be a winning team. This year the ”New Age Consulting”, uBECs very own hippie-inspired team had both the best solutions and the best presentation, and all of us at BEST Uppsala are very proud to send them on to Trondheim and nordBEC 2011!
